Arthur Carruther's Laboratory

Sometimes I feel just like Arthur Carruthers -- working for years in my laboratory, emerging to share my discoveries with the world, only to realize the world has been moving on without me while I was wasting "most of my youth... working in my laboratory."

Honestly, sometimes it frustrates me, but on better days I just shrug and am thankful that I have chosen to spend my life making music and sharing it with the world. Lucky me, that includes the time I spent shooting these videos with Steve, Mike, Jon, Fiona, and her friends. I hope you enjoy the video, and I hope you consider picking up a copy of the CD and let me show some of the things we made in the lab!

When The Captain's Gone

While working with a Dutch band in Amsterdam in the '90's, I wandered into a sailor's bar in the harbor district. I spoke enough Dutch at the time that they brought me into their world for the evening, sharing stories and buying drinks. I'm sure elements of that evening filtered into the song Man Underwater as well. This song blends Chicago blues grit and grime with the grease and garishness of wandering the docks and beaches of Holland. Corky Siegel's masterful harp playing adds smokey depth to Steve and Mike's lurching swagger.

Years Down The Line

This song dates back to my early days on the scene in Chicago. I was playing a lot of open mic nights, cutting my teeth as a performer, and I found an early home at the Earl Of Old Town Pub on Lincoln Avenue. I would saunter in with my battered acoustic, nicknamed Alley Guitar, balanced on my shoulder like a hobo's crutch, and try out my songs. Years Down The Line became a private anthem for a number of us, including my dear friend and fellow songwriter Dahlia Goldstein, whose early passing inspired the song Squeezing The Puzzle Together.

Me and My Near-Blind Hindsight was the song I played for Steve that persuaded him to join The Bad Examples all those years ago. We still love singing it together. It originally appeared on the Kisses 50 cents album. Mike's keyboard part adds just the right touch to bring this version home.
